Beacon
about.
Beacon is an embedded Pomodoro-based focus system built on the Pimoroni Unicorn, designed to enforce distraction-free work sessions through software-driven behaviour rather than user discipline alone.
It combines timed focus sessions, persistent visual feedback, and external automation to reduce context switching during work. Beacon triggers automated emails that activate iOS Shortcuts, blocking selected apps during active sessions. It also tracks completed sessions over time, supports multiple display modes, and integrates environmental data such as temperature, humidity, and air quality.
challenge.
The main challenge was designing a system that meaningfully influences behaviour using a minimal interface. This required encoding focus state, progress, and feedback into a low-resolution LED display, while ensuring reliable communication with external automation systems and maintaining predictable timing across sessions.
results.
Beacon resulted in a stable, multi-mode focus system combining embedded software, automation, and ambient feedback to support sustained focus. The project demonstrates how constrained interfaces and external system integration can shape user behaviour without complex hardware or intrusive notifications.
